The Russian psychologist Ivan Pavlov (1849–1936) demonstrated that contradictory stimulation is the quickest and most efficient way to break down the psychological defenses of an individual (or a handful of individuals), reducing him to a state of devoted credulity in which he will accept as natural and true the most absurd commands and the most contradictory opinions.
